Business plan and financial plan: what banks look for

A business plan rarely fails on the concept. It fails on numbers that contradict the text. Banks and funding bodies read both parts against each other. This guide shows what they check.

What the written part has to deliver

What do you offer and who pays for it. That is all the written part has to answer, but it has to answer it completely. A reviewer reads the summary first, then the business model. If the target group stays unclear, the financial plan gets read with suspicion.

The three calculations in the financial plan

The profitability forecast shows whether the business carries itself. The liquidity plan shows whether you stay solvent every month. Add the capital requirement with a buffer. Lenders check first-year liquidity hardest, because that is where young companies fail.

Where text and numbers drift apart

A typical pattern looks like this. The text promises growth through referrals while the plan budgets paid advertising. Or the text names two employees and the payroll line carries four. Reviewers catch these breaks immediately. Every key number needs a sentence in the text that explains it.

Auditable means traceable

A bank has to be able to recalculate your assumptions. Attach a source to every key figure, such as industry benchmarks or your own sales data. Round numbers without a derivation look guessed. 4,200 euros of monthly revenue with a derivation beats a flat 5,000 without one.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a business plan be?

For banks and funding bodies, 20 to 30 pages plus the financial part usually suffice. What matters is a one-page summary that carries the case. Convince there and the rest gets read.

Do I need a separate financial plan for the bank?

Yes. Lenders expect a profitability forecast, a liquidity plan and the capital requirement for at least three years. A revenue estimate in prose does not replace that.

Is an internet template enough?

A template provides structure, nothing more. Reviewers spot unedited boilerplate quickly. The work sits in your assumptions and their derivation, not in the layout.

What happens after submission?

The bank checks debt service capacity and collateral, funding bodies check viability. Follow-up questions come almost always. If you derived your numbers, you answer them in minutes.
